Two Tips for Men Who Need to Shop for Formal Wear

Whilst it's sensible for anyone who's buying any type of clothing to try it on and assess it before they purchase it, it's especially important for men shopping for formal wear to do this. Formal wear, as its name suggests, is typically worn at important events, where the standard for dressing is higher than usual and it is expected that those in attendance will be dressed in well-fitting, smart-looking outfits. If a man buys formal wear for a special occasion without trying it on and evaluating how much it flatters them, they could end up having to wear an outfit to this occasion that gives them a dishevelled, careless appearance.

Here are two tips for men who need to shop for formal wear.

They Should Try on Each Garment and Evaluate Every Detail Before Making Their Purchase

Trying on suits before purchase should not be skipped. For example, if a man needs a suit for a formal event, he should try on the jacket and ensure that the sleeve cuffs end at his wrist bones and the jacket's shoulders are neither straining against his shoulders nor sitting too loosely on top of them. The former will ensure there is enough space for the man's dress shirt cuffs to extend out past the suit jacket and remain visible, whilst the latter will give the upper part of the outfit a neater look.

Additionally, he should check that he can keep the suit jacket's button closed without his abdomen pushing uncomfortably against it (as this would be both unflattering and uncomfortable). Lastly, he should ensure the suit jacket's lapels are proportionate to the width of his torso. For example, a man with a wider torso would look better in a suit jacket with wide lapels than in one with narrow lapels.

They Should Consider Opting for Classic Colours and Styles

In most instances, it's best for men who need to buy formal wear to choose garments in colours and styles that could be considered classic. This generally means ones that feature neutral colours (like cream, navy, grey, etc.) and that are free of trendy or unconventional things like asymmetrical pockets and unusual prints. The reason for this is that good-quality formal wear is an investment and most men may not be able or want to buy several formal outfits.

For example, if a man buys a formal suit that has bright red lapels or a geometric pattern printed on it, he will be limited in regards to the type of special occasion he can wear it to. He might be able to wear it to a wedding or a big party, but it might be considered inappropriate for him to wear it to a funeral or a business meeting. As such, this man might then have to splurge on a second formal outfit for these other events. In contrast, a man who buys a classic formal suit could wear it to virtually any type of special occasion.

Keep these tips in mind when looking for formal wear from local suppliers.
